UCAS Hub and Track: the walkthrough nobody gives you

Your UCAS Hub is the control room for your entire application - from registering in May 2026 through to seeing your place confirmed on results day in August 2027. Every stage happens there: building the application, watching decisions arrive, replying to offers, and finding your Clearing number if results day goes sideways. Here is what to expect at each stage, checked against UCAS on 20 September 2026.

Stage 1: Register and research (from 12 May 2026)

You can register in the UCAS Hub from 12 May 2026 for 2027 entry. Registration is free - the £34.50 fee only comes at submission. Before touching the application form, use the Hub for what it is good at: saving courses, comparing options, and starting the personal statement builder, which structures your ideas around the three questions. Stage 2: Build the application

The application is a set of sections, each marked complete as you finish it:

• Personal details - including the background questions that feed contextual offer eligibility; fill them in accurately
• Choices - up to five, in no preference order (universities cannot see where else you applied)
• Education and qualifications - every exam taken and pending, exactly as your school records them; your school checks this section, so errors here cause delays
• Employment - paid work only
• Personal statement - the three questions, 4,000 characters shared

You can start but not submit until 1 September 2026. And you cannot submit at all without your reference - if you apply through a school or college, they write and attach it, then send the application on your behalf. This is why schools set internal deadlines weeks before the UCAS ones.

Stage 3: Submit and track

Once your reference is attached and the fee is paid, your application goes to your five universities. From here the Hub becomes a waiting room:

• Decisions arrive one by one - some in weeks, some in months. Silence is normal, not a problem.
• Interviews or tests (medicine, Oxbridge, some others) are arranged by the universities directly - watch the email address on your application, not just the Hub.
• Offers appear with their conditions - read the exact grades and subjects named, not just "conditional".

Stage 4: Reply to your offers

Once all five choices have decided (or their deadlines pass), the Hub shows your reply deadline - personal to you, typically in May or June 2027. This is where you make your firm and insurance choices:

• Firm = your first choice; meet its conditions and the place is yours
• Insurance = your backup, ideally one or two grades lower
• Everything else is automatically declined when you reply

Stage 5: Results day (12 August 2027)

Your Hub updates from around 08:00 - check it before you even collect your grades:

• Confirmed - your firm (or insurance) place is yours; confirmation details follow
• Clearing - both choices declined you, and your Clearing number appears in the Hub. Universities will ask for this number when you call about vacancies
• Unchanged - a university has not yet decided on a near-miss; phone them, then watch the Hub

The habits that make the Hub work for you

1. Use an email address you check daily, and keep it updated - universities and UCAS send time-sensitive requests by email.
2. Log in weekly from submission onward - decisions and deadlines do not wait for you to notice them.
3. Screenshot your offers and reply deadline - boring, but useful if anything is disputed later.
4. Do the research before the form. The Hub tracks an application; it does not tell you whether your five choices fit your grades.
