UCAS Extra: the second chance most applicants do not know about
UCAS Extra lets you keep applying if you have used all five choices and are holding no offers - whether you were rejected everywhere or turned every offer down. For 2027 entry it opens on 25 February 2027, costs nothing, and lets you add one choice at a time until 1 July 2027. Dates verified against UCAS on 20 September 2026.
Who Extra is for
You are eligible the moment both are true:
- You have used all five choices on your application
- You are holding no offers - all five unsuccessful, or you declined every offer you had
If you are still waiting on decisions from any of your five, you are not eligible yet. You become eligible whenever those decisions land, at any point until early July - you do not need to be ready on 25 February.
How Extra works, step by step
- Check eligibility in your UCAS Hub. When you qualify, an "Add an Extra choice" option appears.
- Find courses with vacancies. Use the UCAS search tool and filter for courses showing Extra vacancies - then phone or email the university before applying to confirm they would realistically consider you. This one call saves the most common Extra failure: burning weeks on a course that was never going to say yes.
- Add one Extra choice. One at a time - this is the rule that defines Extra strategy.
- Wait for the decision. If you get an offer, you reply to it: accept it and you are placed; decline it and you can add another Extra choice. If you are unsuccessful, you can immediately add another.
- Repeat until 1 July 2027. That is the last day to add an Extra choice.
The strategy most people miss
One at a time means order matters. Lead with the course you would genuinely most want that also matches your grades - then move down a prepared list. Do not improvise choice by choice.
You can apply somewhere that already rejected you - but only for a different course, and only after asking them directly whether they would consider it. Blindly reapplying to the same course rarely changes the answer.
Your personal statement stays the same. Universities in Extra see the same statement as your original five, which is one more reason to keep choices within your subject area. If you are switching direction entirely, contact the university and ask whether they will accept an updated statement directly - some will.
Declining offers to enter Extra is a real decision. Some applicants decline mediocre offers deliberately to fish for better ones. That can work - but you are then competing one choice at a time with no safety net, and if Extra fails you are in Clearing. Only do it with a researched list of courses that have confirmed they would consider you.
