Missed your A level grades? Your results-day plan

Missing your offer grades is not the end - it is a fork in the road with more good exits than it feels like at 08:00. Universities confirm near-misses every year, Clearing places tens of thousands of students, and remarks, resits and reapplication all exist. The students who land well are the ones who work the options in the right order. A-level results day for 2027 entry is Thursday 12 August 2027.

Here is that order, verified against UCAS and exam-board guidance on 20 September 2026.

Step 1: Check your UCAS Hub before you panic

Your Hub updates from around 08:00 on results day - before many students have their actual grades in hand. Three statuses matter:

• Unconditional firm confirmed - you met it, or the university confirmed you anyway. Near-misses get confirmed every single year, especially by one grade.
• Insurance confirmed - you missed the firm but met your insurance conditions. That place is yours, contractually.
• Clearing - both declined you. Your Clearing number appears in your Hub; universities will ask for it when you call.

Step 2: Phone before you decide anything

If your status is not what you hoped, make two calls before any Clearing call:

1. Your firm choice. Ask directly: "Will you still confirm my place?" If not: "Is there a related course with vacancies you would consider me for?" Universities would often rather move you internally than lose you.
2. Your insurance choice, if applicable - the same questions.

These calls cost minutes and regularly change outcomes. Have your UCAS ID and grades in front of you.

Step 3: Work Clearing properly

If you are in Clearing, you are in good company and the system is built for speed on results day:

• Search vacancies in the UCAS search tool - they update live from the morning
• Call universities, get verbal offers, and only then add your Clearing choice in the Hub - one at a time, and only with a verbal offer in hand
• Ask about accommodation and start dates on the call
• Popular courses fill within hours, so call early and keep moving if lines are busy

Step 4: Know the other exits

Priority review of marking (a "remark"). If you are within a few marks of the next grade boundary and a place hangs on it, your school can request a priority review. Deadlines fall roughly two weeks after results day, outcomes can go down as well as up, and your school advises on whether it is worth it - ask them the same day, because the clock is short.

Resits and reapplication. You can resit A levels in a later series and reapply through UCAS with a gap year - a completely normal route, and for some students the strongest one. Two checks first: whether your target courses accept resits (several medical and dental schools restrict them), and whether you would resit at your school or an exam centre.

A results-day setback feels public and permanent. It is neither. Nobody at university asks what you got in August, and the route in - insurance, Clearing, gap year - is invisible by October. Make the calls, work the list, and judge the outcome by where you end up, not by the 08:00 status.
