What A levels do you need for a Physics degree?

You normally need both A level Physics and Mathematics for a UK Physics degree. Manchester, Leeds and Sheffield all require them for their 2027 BSc offers. Further Maths is helpful but not compulsory in these examples. The grade range is wide: AAB at Sheffield, AAA at Leeds and AAA at Manchester.

Requirements below were checked against official 2027 university pages on 20 September 2026.

2027 Physics offers compared

University Course Standard offer Subject rule
Manchester BSc Physics AAA A Physics + A Maths or Further Maths
Leeds BSc Physics AAA Physics + Maths
Sheffield BSc Physics AAB Maths + Physics, plus science practical passes

Manchester’s contextual offer is A*AA including Physics and Mathematics or Further Mathematics, with the A in one of those subjects. Leeds publishes an Access to Leeds offer of ABB including Physics and Maths. Sheffield’s Access offer is ABB including Maths and Physics*.

This is a subject where the named grades matter more than a total points score. AAA with a lower Physics or Maths grade may not meet Manchester’s condition.

Do you need Further Maths?

Not for these three courses. Standard A level Maths covers the formal requirement, but Further Maths can help with mechanics, calculus, differential equations, matrices and complex numbers.

Take Further Maths if you enjoy it and can maintain your grades. Do not assume four A levels are necessary. A strong three-subject profile meeting the exact offer is usually more valuable than spreading yourself too thinly.

If your school does not offer Further Maths, universities can consider educational context. Your reference can explain availability. Independent preparation can help you personally, but it does not become an extra qualification.

Can you study Physics without A level Physics or Maths?

Direct entry to a standard Physics BSc is unlikely without either core subject. Physics degrees become mathematical immediately, and laboratory work assumes prior physical concepts.

A foundation year may provide a route if you did not take the required subjects. Check:

Do not apply to a standard course hoping admissions will waive an explicit Physics or Maths condition.

Physics BSc versus MPhys

A BSc usually lasts three years. An integrated MPhys usually lasts four and includes more advanced modules and a larger research project.

The MPhys can be helpful for research-led careers, doctoral study and professional recognition, but the right route depends on cost and goals. Many departments let students transfer if they meet progression grades.

Ask each university:

  1. whether BSc and MPhys entry offers differ
  2. what year transfer is allowed
  3. the minimum average for transfer
  4. how accreditation differs
  5. whether placement, international or astrophysics routes remain open

“Students can switch” is not enough without the academic conditions.

What will you study?

Core topics usually include:

Later options may include astrophysics, particle physics, condensed matter, nuclear physics, photonics, medical physics or machine learning. Compare when specialisation begins and whether popular options are guaranteed.

Laboratory work is central. Look at lab hours, group sizes, equipment, error analysis and how reports are assessed. If you want theoretical physics, do not ignore experiments; if you want practical work, check that the course is not dominated by lectures and exams.

Accreditation and careers

Physics courses are often accredited by the Institute of Physics, but the exact professional outcome can differ between BSc and MPhys. Verify the statement for your entry year on the university and IOP sites.

Physics graduates move into research, engineering, data, software, finance, energy, teaching and technical consulting. A degree does not guarantee one route. Programming, placements and projects can matter as much as the course title.

Alternative qualifications

Leeds and Sheffield publish detailed BTEC, Access and international routes while keeping substantial Physics and Maths requirements. An overall vocational grade alone may not qualify you; units and accompanying A levels matter.

Science A-level practical endorsements are also important. Sheffield explicitly requires a pass in practical elements for science A levels taken. Read the whole offer rather than only its letters.

Frequently asked questions

What A levels do I need?

Physics and Maths are the standard core pair.

Do I need Further Maths?

Not for the Manchester, Leeds or Sheffield examples, though it is useful preparation.

What grades do I need?

The checked offers range from AAB to AAA.

Can I apply without Physics?

Usually only through a suitable foundation route, not direct entry to the standard degree.

BSc or MPhys?

Choose based on advanced study, research, cost, accreditation and transfer flexibility.
