What A levels do you need for biomedical science?

Most biomedical science degrees require two science A levels, but the definition of “science” varies. Manchester asks AAB with two of Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics. Sheffield asks AAB with two sciences and accepts a wider list that includes Psychology and Geography. If your career goal is to become a registered biomedical scientist, check IBMS accreditation as carefully as the grades.

2027 subject and grade requirements

Manchester may consider AAA if you take only one core science plus Geography, Psychology, Environmental Studies or Physical Education. It does not normally count overlapping subjects separately: Further Maths with Maths, or Human Biology with Biology.

Sheffield’s accepted science list includes Biology/Human Biology, Chemistry, Maths, Further Maths, Physics, Psychology and Geography. It also refuses Biology plus Human Biology, or Maths plus Further Maths, as the two-science combination. The rule sounds similar but is not identical.

Both courses require GCSE Maths at least grade 4/C in the published details. Science practical passes can also become part of an offer.

Do you need Biology and Chemistry?

They are the safest pair for keeping options open, but they are not compulsory everywhere. Human biology, biochemistry, genetics, microbiology and disease mechanisms sit near the centre of many courses, so Biology and Chemistry give strong preparation.

However:

• Manchester accepts Biology + Maths, Chemistry + Physics and other pairs from its four core sciences.
• Sheffield uses a broader science list and can accept Psychology or Geography as one of the two.
• Other universities may insist on Biology, Chemistry or both.

Do not choose your five courses based on a general article alone. Match your exact pair against each provider’s wording.

Biomedical science, biomedical sciences and accreditation

The singular or plural in the course title does not settle the career route. Course accreditation and placement structure matter more.

UCAS explains that practising as a biomedical scientist in the UK requires registration with the Health and Care Professions Council. An Institute of Biomedical Science accredited degree is a key part of the usual route, alongside approved laboratory training and the IBMS Registration Training Portfolio.

Manchester says plainly that its BSc Biomedical Sciences is not accredited by the IBMS. It chose flexibility in optional units and points students interested in NHS scientist careers toward routes such as the NHS Scientist Training Programme after graduation.

Sheffield’s page states Royal Society of Biology accreditation. That is valuable, but it is not the same statement as IBMS accreditation for biomedical scientist registration. If HCPC registration is your target, verify the exact programme on the IBMS course directory and ask whether an integrated placement completes the training portfolio.

What will you study?

Typical first-year material includes cell biology, genetics, biochemistry, physiology, microbiology and practical laboratory work. Later choices may move toward neuroscience, immunology, pharmacology, cancer biology, infection or data analysis.

Compare these points:

• compulsory laboratory hours and assessment
• human disease content versus broad bioscience flexibility
• optional placement or year in industry
• whether a clinical laboratory placement is available
• accreditation and professional outcomes
• final-year research project

A flexible research-focused degree can be excellent for biotechnology, pharmaceuticals or postgraduate study even when it is not the shortest professional route to biomedical scientist registration.

Contextual and alternative routes

Manchester publishes contextual offers typically ranging AAB-ABC with specified subjects, depending on the applicant and route. Sheffield’s Access offer is ABB including two science subjects.

Sheffield also lists specific BTEC pathways. A DDD Applied Science or Health and Social Care route is accepted only with specified streams or units. This is a good example of why the overall BTEC title and grade are not enough.

Foundation years may help if you lack the normal subject profile, but compare who is eligible, progression conditions, cost and length. A foundation year is not a promise of automatic progression.

Is biomedical science a route into medicine?

It is a separate degree, not a back door into medicine. Graduate-entry medicine is competitive and has its own admissions tests, experience expectations and funding issues. Some universities do not allow internal transfer, and those that do may offer very few places.
