What A levels and portfolio do you need for architecture?

Architecture degrees do not share one compulsory A-level combination. Manchester and Sheffield both ask AAA for 2027 entry, but neither makes A level Art, Maths or Physics universally compulsory. Creative evidence matters: both courses use portfolios, and Manchester prefers breadth across science or Maths and humanities or arts rather than three closely overlapping art subjects.

A-level requirements compared

Manchester welcomes Art or Fine Art, but says they are not required. It prefers a mixture of science or Maths with humanities or arts. Three arts-based subjects, or a BTEC Extended Diploma in Art and Design on its own, do not meet its published requirements.

Sheffield does not list a required A level in the main offer. It requires evidence of artistic ability in a portfolio and accepts a maximum of two Art and Design or Design & Technology subjects. It separately asks GCSE Maths grade 4/C.

Do you need Art, Maths or Physics?

Art: useful, not universally required. It gives you time to develop observation, experimentation and presentation, but a portfolio can draw on photography, model-making, textiles, graphics, sculpture, digital work and personal projects.

Maths: helpful for structure, scale and technical work, but neither checked A-level offer requires it. Sheffield’s GCSE Maths threshold still applies.

Physics: useful for forces, materials and environmental design, but again not compulsory on these examples.

A broad combination such as Art + Maths + History, or Design Technology + Physics + English Literature, can show both creative and analytical range. Grades still matter. Do not add a “perfect” subject if it damages your chance of meeting AAA.

What should an architecture portfolio show?

A portfolio is not a gallery of polished final pieces. It should show how you observe, think, test and improve.

Manchester says it is interested in artistic skill, creative thinking and problem-solving. Applicants who meet the entry requirements may be asked for one PDF portfolio and statement through its self-service system. Its instructions set technical rules including a maximum 20 MB file and warn that missing the deadline may make the application unsuccessful.

Sheffield says it looks for observation, criticality, invention and representation. After application, it asks for ten reproductions of art or design work and sends the detailed format and assessment criteria.

A strong selection usually includes:

• direct observational drawing rather than copied internet images
• process pages with alternatives, mistakes and decisions
• spatial work, models or three-dimensional experiments
• material exploration
• photography used critically rather than decoratively
• one or two self-directed projects
• short, readable annotations explaining your thinking

Follow each school’s instructions over generic portfolio advice. Page count, file size, naming and deadline are part of the assessment process.

Do you need architecture work experience?

It can help you understand practice, but it is not a published substitute for grades or portfolio quality. If you cannot access an architecture office, explore the built environment another way: visit public buildings, sketch streets, compare housing layouts, attend open days or document how people use a space.

Reflect on what you noticed. “I shadowed an architect” is weaker than a specific explanation of how a design constraint changed your view.

Accreditation and the route to qualification

Manchester says its BA is validated by the Royal Institute of British Architects and provides RIBA Part 1. Sheffield says its BA is recognised by RIBA and gives exemption from Part 1.

That does not make a graduate a fully qualified architect. The UK professional route is changing, and students need further education and practical experience under the rules that apply to their cohort. Check the Architects Registration Board and RIBA directly before committing, particularly if professional recognition is your reason for choosing the course.

Contextual and alternative routes

Manchester publishes an ABB contextual offer for eligible applicants. Sheffield’s Access offer is AAB. Eligibility is based on the university’s contextual scheme, not simply lower predicted grades.

Sheffield lists D*DD for a BTEC Extended Diploma and accepts specified T Level and Access routes. Manchester’s subject-mix restrictions mean an art-only qualification profile may not qualify for direct entry even with strong creative work. 1. grades and contextual eligibility
2. prohibited or limited subject combinations
3. portfolio format and deadline
4. accreditation for your cohort

6. cost of materials, field trips and later professional study
