What A levels do you need for civil engineering?

A level Mathematics is the key requirement for civil engineering. Physics is required by some universities but not all: Manchester asks for Maths and Physics, while Sheffield asks for Maths plus GCSE Physics or Combined Science at grade 6. The three 2027 examples compared here publish AAA standard offers, with contextual routes down to AAB or ABB for eligible applicants.

Civil engineering subject requirements

Civil engineering uses mechanics, materials, structures, water, soils, programming and design. That makes Maths non-negotiable on most direct-entry courses.

Physics is less uniform:

• Manchester BEng: AAA including Mathematics, Physics and one other subject. Applicants without Physics may be considered with Further Mathematics, case by case.
• Leeds MEng/BEng: AAA including Mathematics. Its detailed alternative qualification rules still require substantial level 3 mathematics.
• Sheffield BEng: AAA including Maths, plus GCSE Physics or Combined Science at grade 6/B. Sheffield lists acceptable Maths subjects and excludes Statistics or Use of Maths as substitutes.

This is why a broad statement such as “you need Physics for engineering” can mislead. You need to check the named course, not the subject family.

2027 offers compared

Manchester also publishes an ABB offer for eligible UK refugee or care-experienced applicants, including Maths and Physics. Contextual schemes have their own residence, school and personal-circumstance rules. A lower contextual grade is not available simply because you ask for it.

Can you study civil engineering without Physics?

Yes, depending on the university. Sheffield’s published A-level offer names Maths, not A level Physics, but it separately requires GCSE Physics or Combined Science at grade 6/B. Manchester’s standard route names Physics and only considers Further Maths instead case by case.

If you do not take Physics:

1. Filter out courses that require it.
2. Do not treat “preferred” and “required” as the same word.
3. Check GCSE science conditions hidden below the main offer.
4. Consider a foundation year only after reading its eligibility and progression rules.

Computer Science, Chemistry and Design Technology can support an application, but they do not override an explicit Physics requirement.

BEng or MEng: what changes?

A BEng is normally three years; an integrated MEng is normally four. The MEng includes advanced study and can satisfy more of the academic route toward Chartered Engineer status.

Accreditation language deserves careful reading. Sheffield’s BEng is accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators and partially meets the academic requirement for Chartered Engineer registration; the page says accredited further learning, such as an appropriate masters, is needed. Do not translate “accredited” into “automatically chartered”. Professional registration also involves competence and experience after university.

Some universities let students transfer between BEng and MEng if they meet progression standards. That can reduce pressure at application stage, but never assume switching is guaranteed. Ask what grades are needed after first or second year and whether funding changes.

What to compare beyond grades

Civil engineering courses can share a title while offering different experiences. Look for:

• Structures and materials: structural mechanics, concrete and steel design
• Geotechnics: soil mechanics, foundations and ground behaviour
• Water and environment: hydraulics, flooding, sustainability and public health
• Digital work: Python, modelling, surveying and design software
• Design projects: individual and team work based on real constraints
• Placement support: an optional year is useful only if the course helps students find suitable work
• Accreditation: check the exact programme, BEng/MEng route and entry year

Sheffield, for example, describes a broad first and second year covering structures, water, geotechnics and environmental issues, then a realistic team design project. It also offers an optional placement year. Manchester lists industrial experience and study-abroad possibilities. Leeds combines MEng and BEng information on its course route, so verify which award you are choosing in UCAS.

Alternative qualifications

The phrase “BTEC accepted” needs detail. Leeds publishes a DDD route with distinctions in all required Mathematics units plus an interview and diagnostic Maths test. Sheffield lists BTEC combinations that retain A level Maths or specified maths units. Requirements depend on the exact BTEC title and units, not just the overall grade.

EPQ can sometimes change an offer. Leeds says an A in the EPQ may lead to AAB including A in Maths. Sheffield lists AAB including A in Maths plus an A in a relevant EPQ as a fourth-qualification route. An EPQ does not replace Maths.

Build a safer UCAS shortlist

A strong shortlist should answer four questions for every choice:

1. Do you meet the exact Maths, Physics and GCSE science rules?
2. Are your predicted grades above, equal to or below the offer?
3. Is the BEng/MEng accreditation route right for your goal?
4. Do the modules and placement structure fit the work you want to do?
