What A levels do you need for accounting and finance?

You do not always need A level Maths or Accounting for an accounting and finance degree. Manchester, Leeds and Sheffield all publish 2027 routes without requiring either at A level. Strong GCSE Maths can still be compulsory: Leeds asks grade 7 for its BSc Accounting and Finance, while Sheffield asks grade 6 for Accounting and Financial Management.

Requirements below were checked against official 2027 university pages on 20 September 2026.

The direct answer

Good A-level choices include Maths, Economics, Accounting, Business, History, Geography, English or a science, but there is no single required combination across the UK.

The examples show three different admissions models:

Always scroll beyond the large A-level grade on the course page. For this subject, the hidden decision can be a GCSE Maths threshold rather than A level Maths.

2027 entry requirements compared

University Example course A-level offer Maths condition
Manchester BAEcon Accounting and Finance AAA incl one approved subject Check full GCSE section on course page
Leeds BSc Accounting and Finance AAA in any subject GCSE Maths 7/A
Sheffield BA Accounting and Financial Management AAB GCSE Maths 6/B

Manchester’s approved list is broad, but it is still a list. It includes Accounting, Economics, Finance, Business Studies, Government and Politics, Maths, English, Geography, History, Psychology, sciences and Modern Languages, among others. The course page also says it will not accept the combination of Mathematics, Further Mathematics and a native language.

Do you need A level Maths?

Not for these three examples. That does not mean the degree is non-numerical. You will work with financial statements, statistics, economics, investment analysis and quantitative methods.

Leeds signals this through GCSE Maths grade 7. Sheffield requires grade 6. Manchester’s first year includes mathematics and statistics for economists at a level linked to prior qualifications.

Take A level Maths if you enjoy it and can do well, particularly if you may switch toward economics, finance, data or actuarial study. Do not take it solely because you assume every accounting course demands it. A high grade in a suitable subject can be better than a weak Maths grade where Maths is not required.

Do you need A level Accounting?

No. Universities teach financial and management accounting from the foundations. Accounting A level can help you confirm that you enjoy the subject, but it is not a universal admissions advantage.

Your broader preparation matters:

Manchester explicitly accepts this breadth. Leeds says any A-level subjects for its course. Sheffield’s published offer does not name required A-level subjects.

Contextual offers and qualification combinations

Contextual routes can reduce the headline grades:

Sheffield also publishes routes involving a fourth qualification: ABB plus A in a social science-related EPQ, or ABB plus A in Core Maths. Leeds excludes EPQ from its standard A-level count, so never transfer one university’s rule to another.

Vocational routes are equally specific. Sheffield lists DDD for a BTEC Extended Diploma. Leeds publishes detailed combinations and separately recognises the AAT Level 3 Diploma in Accounting with required A-level performance. Verify the exact qualification, size and accompanying subjects.

Accounting, finance or both?

Course names overlap, but the balance differs:

Manchester’s BAEcon sits inside a wider economics and social studies programme. It combines accounting and finance with economics and quantitative methods. Sheffield’s title is Accounting and Financial Management. Leeds offers Accounting and Finance within its Business School.

Read the mandatory modules, not just the title. If you want audit and professional practice, count the accounting modules. If you want investment or banking, check how much finance, statistics and economics is compulsory.

Accreditation and exam exemptions

A degree does not make you a qualified accountant automatically. Some courses and module choices can provide exemptions from selected exams from bodies such as ACCA, CIMA or ICAEW.

Manchester says eligibility depends on optional units and notes that professional qualification structures are changing, so exemptions may change. That warning matters. Before choosing a course based on exemptions:

  1. Check the professional body’s own current database.
  2. Check the exact course title and graduation year.
  3. Confirm which modules you must take.
  4. Remember that remaining exams and practical experience still apply.

Accreditation is useful, but it should sit alongside teaching, placements, course content and admissions fit.

Build a balanced five-choice list

For each option, record:

Then compare your predicted grades honestly. A shortlist of five AAA courses is risky if you are predicted AAB. The course-comparison checklist helps you compare what is actually taught, while UCAS points explained covers tariff offers.
