What A levels do you need for electrical and electronic engineering?

A level Mathematics is essential for electrical and electronic engineering. Physics is useful but not universal: Manchester accepts Physics, Electronics, Further Maths, Chemistry or Computer Science alongside Maths; Sheffield asks for Maths and a science from a published list; Leeds asks AAB including Maths. For 2027, the checked BEng offers range from AAB to A*AA.

2027 offers compared

Sheffield’s science list includes Biology/Human Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Electronics, Engineering, Further Maths, Physics and Technology. This is broader than many applicants expect.

Manchester’s contextual offer is AAA including Maths and one accepted second subject. Sheffield’s Access offer is ABB including Maths and a science. Contextual rules apply only to eligible applicants.

Can you apply without Physics?

Yes at selected universities, but you must still be ready for physical principles. Circuits, signals, electromagnetism, control, power systems and semiconductor devices all use mathematical models of the physical world.

Without Physics:

• Manchester accepts Electronics, Further Maths, Chemistry or Computer Science as the second named subject.
• Sheffield accepts a broad science list.
• Leeds names Maths in its A-level offer.

This flexibility does not transfer to every course. Filter your choices carefully and compare first-year support. If the degree assumes mechanics, waves or electricity knowledge you have not studied, ask how the course bridges the gap.

Electrical versus electronic engineering

The fields overlap, and many degrees combine them.

• Electrical engineering often leans toward power generation, motors, grids, control and high-voltage systems.
• Electronic engineering often leans toward circuits, embedded systems, communications, semiconductor devices and signal processing.
• Combined courses may later offer pathways in robotics, renewable energy, computer engineering or communications.

Do not choose from the title alone. Read compulsory modules in all years. A course called “Electronic and Electrical” can still have a very different balance from another with the words reversed.

BEng or MEng and accreditation

A BEng is normally three years and an integrated MEng four. If Chartered Engineer status matters, read the precise accreditation statement.

Leeds says its BEng is accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology and partly meets the academic requirement for CEng; accredited further learning is required to complete that academic benchmark. Manchester says its course is being re-accredited for 2027-2031 entry, with the outcome due in early 2027. That is more precise than claiming the future cohort is already confirmed.

Before applying, check:

1. accreditation for your start year
2. whether it covers BEng, MEng or both
3. whether further learning is needed for CEng
4. transfer rules between BEng and MEng
5. whether an industrial year changes the course code or accreditation

Professional registration also requires workplace competence and experience; it is not automatic at graduation.

Alternative qualifications and foundation years

Alternative routes preserve the Maths requirement in different ways.

Leeds accepts a specified BTEC route with distinctions in required Maths units plus a diagnostic Maths test. Sheffield’s BTEC routes normally add A level Maths, and its T Level route adds grade B in A level Maths. Manchester links applicants without the required grades or subjects to an integrated foundation year.

An EPQ can change some combinations: Leeds lists grade A in the EPQ plus ABB including Maths, while Sheffield lists ABB including Maths and a science plus B in a relevant EPQ. The EPQ does not replace Maths or the required science.

What to compare beyond entry requirements

Look for practical depth as well as lecture topics:

• laboratory hours and access to equipment
• individual and group design projects
• analogue and digital electronics
• programming and embedded systems
• control, communications and signal processing
• electrical machines, power electronics and renewable energy
• placement support and industry projects
• optional modules and specialisation timing

Placements are valuable but usually competitive rather than guaranteed. Ask how many students secure them, what support is provided and whether you pay a reduced fee during the year.
